Research Section

Jerry Uelsmann

Jerry Uelsmann is an American photographer who is famous for his use of multiple images within a photograph. At the begining of his career he would always be in his darkroom and still, even with the invention of the digital camera, loves to create his photos in the darkroom. Uelsmann creates a sense of surrealism through his images and photographs. By combining multiple negatives with the use of printing, Uelsmann is able to create interesting and surreal images that evoke motifs of expressionism. Uelsmann's work was first percieved as serious however once revised one can also view the mockeries and visual teasers behind his work.

Lucas Samaras

Lucas Samaras is a Greek photographer who is considered as a pioneer in the field of photography. His background in art led him to use materials such as acrylics and oils to manipulate his photographs, giving them a surreal transofrmation. Once Polaroid gave him a SX-70 camera for expirementation, Samaras began transforming his photographs with his materials. Now Samaras has converted to the digital age and still works on the transformation of photographs, however, through different means.

Assignment 5B and 5C

For these photographs, the emphasis was put on diverse lighting and posing. For the photographs indoors the iso on my camera had to be altered depending on the amount of light. I often played around with the lighting in my house by opening and closing lights and curtains to let in natural light. If the scene was still too dark I increased my iso to let more light into the lens. For the dark picture I shone a light onto the model face with a flashlight and took my picture.

Outdoor photography was quite succesfull and the natural light worked very well with the camera. I had to set my camera to a relatively low iso so that the photos were not too bright. For the close-ups I often used the macro setting to achieve a more focused view of my subject.

Assignment 5C

I simply removed the colour from the model giving it a black and white style. Although black and white is perhaps a cliche style, I find it suits this photograph rather well.

This rendition of the photograph was altered by giving it a more grainy feel.

This rendition of the photography is a drastic change to the photo. It makes it look like a large puzzle and I find it to be a rather fascinating effect given the mysterious look the woman in the photo is making.

This final rendition is also rather drastic yet fascinating. It is called the plastic effect in photoshop, however to me it seems as if the girl looks to be drowning by this effect. It surely makes the photo even more fascinating.

Assignment 5A

For this assignment we went into the studio and took some pictures. I put my camera on auto and used the two studio lamps to affect the lightning. I moved the lights around to achieve different shdaows on the backdrop. At the same time, I used the lights to achieve darker environments. The darker pictures were created by lowering the height of the lamps and then shining it on her torso.

Assignment 4: Blur and Stop Motion Photography

Here are the links to my assignment 4 photos.

Description of Photography

Blur Photography

Blur photography was achieved with a very slow shutter speed. For the pictures of the highway I used a friends camera. I used an eight second shutter speed. Also, I had to place the camera on a tripod. With a high ISO and a high shutter speed I was able to capture, what I believe, are really interesting pictures of the highway. For other blurred photos I simply used a high shutter speed and adjusted the ISO depending on the amount of light in the given environment. One of the most interesting photos are the ones where I appear as a silhouette sitting in two chairs beside the candle. This was done with a fifteen second exposure. I sat in one chair for about seven seconds and switched chairs for about another seven seconds. I found this idea really interesting and it seems as if I am having a conversation with myself.

Panning Photography

Panning photography was indeed a difficult task to accomplish. At first my panning photos of Cong running and the cars on the street were rather good. I used a shutter speed of 1/30 seconds and followed the cars smoothly to achieve a blurred background but sharp subject. The technique was tough but the picture of Cong running and the picture of the firetruck came out really great in my opinion.

Stop Motion Photography

Stop motion photography was a really fun thing to do. To achieve succesfull stop motion photography I used a very high shutter speed. This however affected the amount of light going into the lens therefore I had to counter the high  shutter speed with a high ISO. This high ISO ensured enough light to come into the tiny opening from the lens.

Assignment 3

Original Picture
I took this picture right outside my home. I felt it was a very interesting picture because of the bright red stop sign coinciding with the red truck.
Sepia
In this photo I used the sepia effect to create the color. I found this effect really nice due to the large contrast between the street and the snow.
Selective Focus
I used a selective focus only on the stop sign for this edit of the photo. I also liked this one very much because it brings out the stop sign. I find the idea of a stop sign truly interesting and the emphasis on the sign portrays a subtle message.
Selective Colour
In this edition of the picture I used the focal black and white tool to display colour only on the truck. I gave it a rather small area and a rather sharp colour. I find this effect was also really nice and worked well with the picture.
Black and White To edit this picture I simply chnaged the colour to black and white and playing with the contrast to get the best photo. I honestly find the black and white was not a very effective chnage. I find that the lack of colour takes the life away from the photo.
